Reconstruction
Reconstruction After Trauma
Often involves individualized and innovative solutions for a diverse set of issues throughout the body from trauma. This includes patients suffering from problematic scaring and functional loss. Helping patients restore their quality of life is a rewarding part of plastic surgery.
Microsurgery
Reconstructive microsurgery involves specialized operating microscopes and precise instrumentation are used to repair intricate structures such as blood vessels and nerves less than a few millimeters in diameter. This field has made a major impact to restore form and function to individuals impaired by trauma, cancer and congenital anomalies.
Microsurgery is a tool used by very few plastic surgeons due to the complexity of performing specific procedures including transfer of tissue from one part of the body to another (free tissue transfer). Dr. Strazar has subspeciality training in microsurgery and performs free tissue transfers regularly for breast cancer patients in Toronto. Microsurgical procedures represent a wide range of highly individualized operations. Microsurgical reconstruction is typically reserved for complex reconstructive surgery problems when other options (primary closure, skin grafting, local or regional flap transfer) are inadequate.
Burns
Burns happen to patients of all ages due to accidents and scalds. Treatment often involves a deep and inherent knowledge of the skin and anatomy. As well treatment demands a strong appreciation for cosmetic and aesthetic principles to restore each patient’s wellbeing. The use of scar revisions, compression garments, lasers, and skin care can greatly improve the appearance and function of burn scars.
Breast Reconstruction
Breast reconstruction, an integral part of breast cancer treatment. By restoring form to one or both breasts after lumpectomy or mastectomy, breast reconstruction improves self-image and sense of wholeness which is an integral part of the treatment and recovery from breast cancer. Reconstruction of the breast after lumpectomy or mastectomy is often one of the most rewarding procedures to perform as a plastic surgeon.
