What Is Breast Reconstruction?
Breast reconstruction, an integral part of breast cancer treatment. By restoring form to one or both breasts after lumpectomy or mastectomy, breast reconstruction improves self-image and sense of wholeness which is an integral part of the treatment and recovery from breast cancer. Reconstruction of the breast after lumpectomy or mastectomy is often one of the most rewarding procedures to perform as a plastic surgeon.
The goal of breast reconstruction is to restore a natural, feminine appearance. Breast reconstruction can be done immediately at the time of mastectomy or in a delayed fashion, months to years later. Because of the importance of reconstruction in a breast cancer patient’s recovery, breast reconstruction is covered by OHIP.
