Inverted Nipple Correction
Inverted nipples are when the nipple has folded in on itself or retracted inward. This can result in frustrations around how your breast looks, discomfort and difficulty breastfeeding. With an inverted nipple correction, the nipple is surgically adjusted so it faces outward, resulting in an attractive shape you can feel good about.
Based on how severely your nipples are inverted, there are a few surgical options of correcting the issue. Dr. Strazar will discuss these with you during your consultation.
What Does the Inverted Nipple Repair Procedure Involve?
Inverted nipple repair is generally completed using local anesthetic. Once Dr. Strazar has determined what exactly is causing the inversion, he will utilize a very small, hidden incision at the base of the nipple and create forward projection for the nipples, reshaping them for the desired aesthetic result. Sutures are then used to provide the nipples with a basis of support, enabling them to heal with a more outward projection.
Can I Breastfeed After Inverted Nipple Correction?
Breastfeeding may or may not be affected by inverted nipple surgery. The procedure typically involves division of some of the milk ducts in order to release the fibrous bands that are “tethering” the nipple in an inverted position. Depending on the degree of inversion, sensitivity or breastfeeding may be affected. During the initial consultation, Dr. Strazar will explain all aspects of the procedure, including all of the risks and benefits, to help you determine the best option for your needs.
Recovery After Inverted Nipple Correction
Minimizing direct pressure over the nipple is imperative post-operatively. A padded dressing will protect the nipple. Although exercise is to be avoided for 2 weeks, the patient can often return to work the next day after surgery.
